The short answer: wear clean, ironed, simple clothes that are one step more formal than the people already doing the job. For most office interviews in India that means a light-coloured formal shirt with dark trousers for men, and a formal kurta or a shirt with trousers for women, with clean shoes.
Men
| Interview type | What to wear |
|---|---|
| Office, bank, corporate | Light formal shirt (white, light blue, light grey), dark trousers, black or brown formal shoes, belt |
| BPO, retail, sales | Formal shirt and trousers; a tie is optional |
| Delivery, warehouse, technician | Clean collared shirt or plain polo, trousers or clean jeans, closed shoes |
| Senior or client-facing role | Formal shirt, trousers, tie; a blazer if the company is formal |
Women
| Interview type | What to wear |
|---|---|
| Office, bank, corporate | Formal kurta with straight pants or churidar, or a formal shirt with trousers; simple saree is also fine |
| BPO, retail, front desk | Plain or lightly printed kurta, or shirt and trousers |
| Hospital, hotel, field roles | Neat kurta or shirt and trousers with comfortable closed shoes |
Choose plain or simple prints, light jewellery and comfortable footwear you can walk in.
Grooming checklist
- Clothes washed and ironed — this matters more than brand or price
- Clean, polished shoes
- Neat hair; men shaved or beard trimmed
- Short, clean nails
- Light or no perfume
- A simple bag or folder for documents
Video interview
- Wear the same formal top you would wear in person — the camera shows mostly your upper body.
- Choose solid colours; thin stripes and busy prints flicker on camera.
- Sit in front of a plain wall with light on your face. See our video interview tips.
Common mistakes
- T-shirts with big logos or slogans
- Slippers or sports sandals for office roles
- Very tight, very loose or crumpled clothes
- Bright neon colours and heavy jewellery
- Strong perfume
No formal clothes?
You do not need to buy new clothes. A clean, ironed light shirt and dark trousers, or a simple kurta, is enough for almost every entry-level interview. Borrowing a formal shirt from a friend is perfectly fine.
