The short answer: a good self introduction takes 45 to 60 seconds and has four parts — who you are, what you studied, what you can do, and why you want this job. Practise it out loud until it sounds natural, not memorised.
Almost every interview starts with "Tell me about yourself" or "Introduce yourself". It sets the tone for the rest of the conversation, so a clear answer gives you an easy start. Below is a simple format, five sample answers for different jobs, and the mistakes to avoid.
The 4-part format
- Who you are — your name and where you are from. One line.
- Education — your highest qualification, college or board, and the year. Mention a strong subject or project only if it fits the job.
- Skills and experience — two or three things you can do that matter for this role: languages, computer skills, a part-time job, an internship, a project.
- Why this job — one line connecting you to the role and the company.
Keep personal details such as your father's occupation or your hobbies short or skip them, unless the interviewer asks.
5 sample answers
1. Fresher graduate (office or customer support role)
"Good morning. My name is Priya Verma and I am from Indore. I completed my B.Com from DAVV in 2025. During college I worked part-time at a local coaching centre, where I handled student enquiries on the phone and kept fee records in Excel. I am comfortable speaking in Hindi and English. I applied for this customer support role because I enjoy helping people solve problems, and I want to grow in a company that values good service."
2. 12th pass (delivery or field role)
"My name is Rohit and I live in Sector 62, Noida. I passed Class 12 in 2024. I have my own bike and a valid driving licence, and I know the roads around Noida and East Delhi well. For the last year I have helped at my uncle's shop with home deliveries. I am looking for a full-time delivery job where I can earn steadily and take on more responsibility over time."
3. Telecaller or BPO
"Hello, I am Sana Khan from Lucknow. I completed my BA in 2025. I speak Hindi, Urdu and English, and I type at about 30 words per minute. In my final year I volunteered at a college helpdesk, answering questions from new students. I enjoy talking to people and staying patient on difficult calls, which is why I applied for this telecaller role."
4. IT fresher
"Good afternoon. I am Arjun Nair from Kochi. I completed my B.Tech in Computer Science in 2025. My final-year project was a library management web app built with PHP and MySQL, and I recently finished an online course in JavaScript. I enjoy fixing bugs and learning new tools. I applied here because your team builds web products, and I want to start my career writing real code for real users."
5. Career gap
"My name is Neha Joshi and I am from Pune. I completed my BBA in 2022. After graduation I spent two years supporting my family's business, where I handled billing, supplier calls and stock records. I also completed a Tally course last year. Now I am ready to work full-time, and this accounts assistant role matches what I have been doing."
Change these to match your own life — interviewers can tell when an answer is copied.
Mistakes to avoid
- Repeating your resume line by line. They already have it. Pick the two or three points that matter for this job.
- Talking for three minutes. Stop at about one minute and let them ask follow-up questions.
- Starting with "As you can see in my resume…" Speak to them directly.
- Negative remarks about a previous employer, college or teacher.
- Sounding memorised. Know your points, not every word.
How to practise
- Write your answer in four short lines, one for each part.
- Record yourself on your phone and listen back. Cut anything that sounds like filler.
- Practise with a friend who asks a follow-up question after your answer.
- For online interviews, practise looking at the camera, not the screen.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a self introduction be?
About 45 to 60 seconds. That is enough to cover who you are, your education, your key skills and why you want the job.
Can I introduce myself in Hindi?
Yes, if the interview is in Hindi or the job mainly needs Hindi. For roles that need English, such as customer support in English, answer in English to show your speaking skills.
Should I talk about my family in the introduction?
Keep it to one line or skip it. Interviewers mainly want to know about your education, skills and interest in the job.
What if I have no work experience?
Talk about college projects, part-time work, internships, volunteering or courses. These show your skills just as well for a fresher role.
