The short answer: use a quiet room with light on your face, a stable internet connection and a charged device placed at eye level. Test the meeting link 15 minutes early, dress as you would in person, look at the camera when speaking and keep your resume open on paper beside you.
Before the interview: setup
| Item | What to do |
|---|---|
| Device | Laptop or phone, fully charged and plugged in. Close other apps. |
| Position | Camera at eye level — prop a phone on books. Keep the phone horizontal if possible. |
| Internet | Sit near the Wi-Fi router, or use good mobile data. Turn off downloads. |
| Light | Face a window or lamp. Avoid a bright window behind you. |
| Sound | Quiet room; wired earphones with a mic reduce echo. |
| Background | A plain wall or tidy room. Avoid beds and clutter. |
| App | Install Google Meet, Zoom or Teams in advance and check your display name. |
Checklist 15 minutes before
- Join the test link or open the app and check camera and mic.
- Put your phone on Do Not Disturb (if not using it for the call).
- Keep water, a pen, paper and your resume nearby.
- Tell family members you need quiet for the next hour.
- Join the meeting 2–5 minutes early.
During the interview
- Look at the camera when speaking, not at your own video.
- Speak slightly slower than normal; video can lag.
- Pause a second before answering so you do not talk over the interviewer.
- Nod and smile to show you are listening.
- Mute only if there is noise; unmute before you answer.
- If the connection drops, rejoin quickly and say: "Sorry, my connection dropped — could you repeat the last question?"
What to wear
Dress fully formal, at least from the waist up — a light, solid-colour shirt or a formal kurta works best on camera. See what to wear for an interview.
Phone interviews
- Take the call in a quiet place with good network.
- Stand or sit straight — it makes your voice sound more confident.
- Keep your resume in front of you.
- Confirm the next step and the interviewer's name at the end.
Common mistakes
- Joining late because of app updates
- Sitting in a dark room or against a bright window
- Reading answers from the screen — it is noticeable
- Background noise from TV or traffic
- Casual clothes or lying on a bed

Rejoin quickly, apologise briefly and ask the interviewer to repeat the last question. Keep the HR contact number handy to message if needed.
Should I keep notes during a video interview?
Brief notes on paper are fine, such as key points or questions to ask. Do not read full answers — interviewers can tell.
