Common Interview Questions for Freshers: 15 Questions with Sample Answers

Most interviews use the same core questions. Here are the 15 you are most likely to hear as a fresher, with what the interviewer is looking for and a sample answer for each.

The short answer: most fresher interviews come back to the same questions — about you, your strengths, why you want the job and how you handle problems. Prepare a short, honest answer for each of the 15 below and you will be ready for most interviews.

For each question you will find what the interviewer really wants to know and a sample answer. Use the samples as a guide and replace the details with your own.

About you

1. Tell me about yourself.

What they want: a quick, clear summary. Sample: "I am Ravi from Jaipur. I finished my BBA this year, worked part-time at a mobile store for a year and enjoy talking to customers. I am looking for a sales role where I can learn and earn based on results." See our full guide to self introduction in an interview.

2. What are your strengths?

What they want: strengths that match the job, with proof. Sample: "I am patient and a good listener. At my part-time job I handled complaints calmly and most customers left happy."

3. What is your weakness?

What they want: honesty and effort to improve. Sample: "My Excel skills were basic, so I am doing an online course and now use formulas like VLOOKUP every day." Avoid fake weaknesses such as "I work too hard".

4. Where do you see yourself in five years?

What they want: that you plan to grow, ideally with them. Sample: "I want to become a team leader after learning the work well and handling bigger accounts."

5. What are your hobbies?

What they want: a glimpse of your personality. Name one or two real hobbies and say one line about each.

About the job

6. Why do you want this job?

What they want: that you understand the role. Sample: "I enjoy speaking with people, and this role lets me do that every day while learning sales. I also like that you offer training for new joiners."

7. What do you know about our company?

What they want: proof you did homework. Spend ten minutes on their website before the interview and mention what they sell, where they work or something recent.

8. Why should we hire you?

What they want: a match between your skills and their needs. Sample: "You need someone who can handle calls in Hindi and English and log details accurately. I can do both, I learn quickly, and I can join immediately."

9. Are you comfortable with shifts, travel or field work?

What they want: an honest answer. If you have a limit (no night shifts, for example), say it politely now rather than leaving after a week.

10. What salary do you expect?

What they want: a realistic number. Give a range based on similar job posts. Read our guide to answering the expected salary question.

About how you work

11. Tell me about a problem you solved.

What they want: a real example. Use three steps: the situation, what you did, and the result. Sample: "Our college fest sponsor dropped out a week before the event. I called ten local shops and found two new sponsors, so the event went ahead."

12. How do you handle pressure?

What they want: that you stay calm. Give an example from exams, a part-time job or an event, and say how you plan your work.

13. Do you prefer working alone or in a team?

What they want: flexibility. Sample: "I can do both. I like finishing my own tasks carefully, and I also enjoy helping teammates when work is heavy."

14. Why did you choose your course?

What they want: your reasoning. If the job is unrelated to your degree, explain what made you change direction.

15. Do you have any questions for us?

What they want: interest. Always ask one or two: "What does a typical day look like?" or "What training do new joiners get?" Do not start with leave or salary hikes.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common HR interview questions?

Tell me about yourself, why do you want this job, what are your strengths and weaknesses, why should we hire you, and what salary do you expect. Prepare these five first.

How should a fresher prepare for an interview?

Read the job post, research the company, prepare short answers to common questions with real examples, and practise out loud. Keep your documents ready.

Is it okay to say I don't know in an interview?

Yes. An honest "I am not sure, but I would find out by…" is better than a wrong answer said with confidence.

What should I ask at the end of an interview?

Ask about the work, training or team, for example "What does a typical day in this role look like?" Avoid asking about leave or salary hikes first.
