The short answer: a probation period is a trial period at the start of a job — commonly 3 to 6 months in India — when the employer checks your work and you check whether the job suits you. You are paid during probation. Notice periods are usually shorter, and after a successful review you receive a confirmation letter.
How long is probation?
| Role | Common probation |
|---|---|
| Entry-level, retail, BPO | 3 months |
| Office and corporate roles | 3–6 months |
| Senior or specialised roles | 6 months, sometimes longer |
Your exact probation is written in your offer or appointment letter. Rules can also vary by state and industry.
Salary during probation
- You are paid your agreed salary during probation.
- Some companies pay a slightly lower amount during probation and increase it on confirmation — this should be written in your offer.
- PF and ESIC normally apply from your joining date if you are eligible.
Leave during probation
Many companies allow limited leave during probation, such as a few casual or sick leaves, and full leave benefits start after confirmation. Policies differ, so check your HR policy.
Notice period during probation
Notice during probation is usually shorter — often 7 to 15 days, sometimes none — for both you and the employer. See notice period explained.
Can probation be extended?
Yes. If your performance needs improvement, the company may extend probation, usually by 1–3 months, and should tell you in writing what to improve.
How to get confirmed
- Be on time and keep good attendance.
- Learn your work fast and take notes.
- Finish tasks on time and update your manager.
- Ask for feedback midway: "Is there anything I should improve before my review?"
- Act on the feedback and show progress.

After probation
- You receive a confirmation letter or email.
- Full benefits apply — leave, insurance, increments as per policy.
- Your notice period usually becomes longer, as per your letter.
